Sometimes glasses can’t correct the visual problem. In the case of corneal degenerative diseases, such as keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, and corneal scarring, other special contact lenses are used.

• RGP (rigid gas permeable) lenses can correct the more difficult prescriptions that may be difficult to achieve in spectacles.
• In the cases of advanced forms of the conditions mentioned, scleral contact lenses will yield the best results. Scleral Lenses are similar to RGP lenses except they cover the entire colored part of the eye like a soft lens would, but are generally made of similar materials to RGPs. Scleral lenses can even cover the white part of the eye depending on the need.

• Aniseikonia happens when the difference between your right and left eye is too great that the glasses correction will lead to significant discomfort and/or double vision. In most cases, soft lenses are sufficient to correct this.

Corneal degenerative disease falls under the “Medically Necessary Contact Lens” benefit of your vision plan.

Other custom lenses include lenses that cosmetically and visually enhance conditions such as aniridia (lack of an iris; the colored part of the eye).

• Those with aniridia do not have the ability to regulate light which can lead to blurriness. Our pupils are simply an opening in the iris and works just like a shutter found in a camera. These prosthetic lenses are made to order and replicate the average size, color and texture of an existing iris.
• Lenses for the use as props, such as for Halloween or for a commercial, movie or other production are available at Crystal Eyecare. Please note that you may want to do this with ample time before a deadline as these lenses in some cases are made-to-order and require time.
• Colored contacts are also available to change your normal color and add some fun to your look.
