Myopia, or nearsightedness, is one of the most common vision problems affecting children today, and it has become far more common over recent decades. In the United States, myopia among people ages 12 to 54 rose from about 25% in the early 1970s to nearly 42% by the early 2000s (Vitale et al., 2009). Higher levels of myopia are also associated with a greater risk of eye conditions later in life, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment.
At Crystal Eyecare, we specialize in evidence-based myopia management to help slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. Located in Red Bank, NJ, our optometry team provides personalized treatment plans with the goal of protecting your child’s long-term vision and quality of life.
What is Myopia Management?
Myopia management refers to clinical strategies used to slow the progression of myopia in children and teens. Instead of simply correcting blurry vision with glasses or traditional contact lenses, myopia management focuses on addressing the underlying progression of the condition.
One of the most effective treatments available today is MiSight® 1 day contact lenses. In a three-year randomized clinical trial, these FDA-approved soft daily lenses slowed the progression of nearsightedness by about 59% in children ages 8 to 12 (Chamberlain et al., 2019). Follow-up research found the benefit sustained across six years of wear (Chamberlain et al., 2024) and retained after children stopped treatment (Chamberlain et al., 2025), and similar results have been reported in everyday practice (Huang et al., 2026). They work by using concentric treatment zones that simultaneously correct vision and signal the eye to slow its elongation.
For children who are not ready for contact lenses, Essilor® Stellest® spectacle lenses may provide a glasses-based myopia management option. In 2025, the FDA authorized Stellest as the first eyeglass lens in the United States to both correct nearsightedness and slow pediatric myopia progression. Stellest lenses have a clear central zone for distance vision and rings of tiny peripheral lenslets designed to create myopic defocus that may help slow eye elongation. The FDA-reviewed 24-month study reported a 71% reduction in myopia progression and a 53% reduction in axial elongation compared with single-vision control lenses. Learn more from the FDA about Essilor Stellest eyeglass lenses. We can review whether MiSight®, Stellest®, lifestyle guidance, or another option is the better fit based on your child’s age, prescription, eye health, and exam findings (FDA, 2025; FDA De Novo, 2025).
Evidence-Based Approach to Care
At Crystal Eyecare, we use treatment methods supported by peer-reviewed research and national standards in pediatric eye care. Our myopia management program may include:
- MiSight® 1 day contact lenses, a proven, child-friendly solution for myopia control.
- Essilor® Stellest® spectacle lenses, an FDA-authorized glasses-based option for eligible children ages 6 to 12 at treatment initiation.
- Customized visual hygiene recommendations, including limiting screen time and increasing time spent outdoors. Clinical studies show that more time spent outdoors in natural light may help delay the onset of myopia.
- In some cases, low-dose atropine eye drops may be considered as an additional tool. While not suitable for every patient, atropine has shown promise in clinical trials when used under close supervision. However, it is typically recommended only in specific scenarios and is not our primary treatment method.
We focus on non-invasive, well-tolerated treatments that align with the individual needs of each child and their family.

FAQs
At what age should myopia management start? Earlier is better. Management works best while a child is still progressing, often around ages 8 to 12, though we assess each child individually and can help older children and teens as well.
How does MiSight® slow myopia? MiSight® is an FDA-approved daily disposable soft lens with concentric treatment zones that correct vision while signaling the eye to slow its elongation.
Will my child see and function normally in the lenses? Yes. These are single-use daily lenses worn for school, sports, and screen time, with clear vision comparable to standard contact lenses.
What is Essilor® Stellest®? Essilor® Stellest® is an FDA-authorized eyeglass lens for eligible children with myopia. It corrects vision through the central portion of the lens and uses peripheral lenslets designed to help slow myopia progression.
Is Stellest® a replacement for MiSight®? Not necessarily. Stellest® is a glasses-based option, while MiSight® is a daily disposable contact lens. The best choice depends on age, prescription, eye health, maturity, lifestyle, and whether the child is comfortable with contact lenses.
Do you accept insurance? We work with most major vision plans. Myopia management services may require private pay depending on coverage, and we will help you understand your options.
